As a non-profit organization, we are devoted to the development of contemporary dance as a vital art form within the community through performance, education, and outreach.
In 1984, Dorothy Fried, Keith Nichols and Stephanie Simmons founded Kinetics Dance Theatre to promote dance through performance and to offer high quality dance education to students of all ages. Kinetics is a dual-component, non-profit organization, comprised of the Professional Dance Company, Apprentice and Student Dance Companies, as well as the School of Contemporary Dance. The Professional Company is committed to creating unique and diverse modern dance works for audiences of all ages. Kinetics performs year-round in a variety of venues throughout the Mid-Atlantic Region.
Kinetics Dance Theatre is proud to offer a wide variety of dance styles for all ages! Students can begin at age two, in our Parent/Child dance classes. At age three, students begin taking class independently in our Creative Dance classes, where they explore the basics of dance and creative expression. Students then move on to our Dance Basics and Dance Fundamentals classes where they are introduced to Ballet and Tap. Upon completion of Dance Fundamentals, students move on to our Pre-Level, where they can continue to study Ballet and Tap, but are also introduced to Modern, Jazz, and Hip Hop.
At the age of 8, students begin taking classes within our Level System. Students may continue taking Ballet, Modern, Jazz, Tap, and Hip Hop classes, but are also eligible to try some of our specialty classes. We offer Musical Theatre, Lyrical, and Repertory and Choreography class for students ages 9 and older. Advanced students have the opportunity to participate in Pointe Classes and Dance Improvisation & Partnering at the recommendation of their instructor.
We also recognize that many dancers get a late start! We also offer Beginner classes for Teens in Ballet, Jazz, Modern, and Tap.
Adult classes are also offered at Kinetics. Kinetics is proud to feature a Modern Master Class series for Adults and session classes in Ballet, Jazz, and Tap. We also offer adult classes in Yoga, Pilates, Barre Burn, Yogalates and more! Classes sponsored by Kinetics, rather than Howard County Parks and Recreation, can be taken on a drop-in basis. Skilled adult dancers may also audition for the Kinetics Professional Dance Company
Throughout the year, Kinetics will host a wide variety of workshops, so be on the lookout for specialty classes! In the past, we have held workshops in African Dance, Ballroom Dance, Leaps and Turns, Children’s Yoga, and more!
